When Stroud's buses were green (and even red)

Stroud's Buses
Ebley Coaches

The Ebley story continues under Cotswold Green

Ebley Coach Services, trading as Ebley Bus and Student Link, was Stroud's second largest local bus service provider.

Complete with former Stroud Valleys destination blind is this ex-Warrington Borough Council Dennis Dart with Carlyle bodywork, one of four operated by Ebley. It is seen at the setting down stop at London Road having arrived on a Saturday journey from Chalford, Ebley being the sole Saturday operator on this service, which sees just four return journeys. Comapre this to 1960 when there were 76 Saturday return trips!

Stepping in where Stagecoach has withdrawn from commercial services, Ebley was one of four smaller firms undertaking local service work on behalf of Gloucestershire County Coucil, the others being:
  • Beaumont Travel ~ long standing operators of all but one journey between Stroud and Wotton-under-Edge (service 40) and Arlingham to Stroud (242)
  • Cotswold Experience ~ covering Naislworth locals and journeys from Stroud (Cornhill, not Merrywalks) to Oakridge via Summer Street, Bisley (25), Standish Hospital (19), Cheltenham via Sheepscombe, Whiteway (23), Bowbridge/Bourne (27), Ranbdwick via Ruscombe (30), Woodchester (67)
  • Swanbrook ~ operating the Red Line village demand responsive link in the Severn Vale
The largest was Ebley. In additon to registered school services, requiring five double decks, Ebley operated:
  • Most journeys on 8/8A (Mason Road and Uplands). Three trips on each of the 8 and 8A in mid morning and early afternoon are retained commercially by Stagecaoch and in a return to the practises of the 1980s and early 1990s, Stagecoach did not publicise the majority operator's journeys.
  • All Saturday journeys on the 21 (Stroud - Chalford), amounting to just four return trips (where once this service operated at 20 minute intervals).
  • Stroud to Dursley via Selsely, Nympsfield (35)
  • Forest Green to Cheltenham via Stroud, Poainswick (46, Sundays only)
  • Stroud - Kingscourt (236)
  • Journeys at times Stagecoach fail to operate to Minchinhampton nd Tetbury via Amberley or Brimscombe (Ebley service 228/254, noting that these were the old Western National numbers). Included are all Saturday journeys
  • All journeys on Saturdays between Stroud, Minchinhampton and Cirencester plus some on Mondays to Fridays, again noting the Western National series number.

To think that Mason Road used to see a double deck at peak times! The service under Ebley was operated by Darts and Mercedes minibuses, with occasional Stagecoach journeys. Note the "Ebley Bus" logo, more modern than the gold Ebley Coach Services previously used and as seen on the double deck below

Ebley operated Bristol VR double decks on fare paying school services in the Stroud area. Not so long ago, Stagecoach held the monopoly in double decks
